EPI Company initiates Wero roll-out in the Netherlands

As part of the migration process from iDEAL to Wero announced earlier this year, EPI enters a new phase with the roll-out of webshops' payment use case with all participating Dutch banks. Through a single integration of Wero, merchants will be able to reach a larger scale at European level while offering independent, sovereign payments to their customers.

Brussels / Amsterdam, 27 October 2026 – European Payments Initiative (EPI) today announced the ignition of the next phase of iDEAL to Wero migration with the launch of online commercial payments with all participating Dutch banks from October 26th. The ignition of the Wero payment service now allows payment service providers (PSPs) to progressively allow the deployment of Wero for Dutch merchants.

From now on merchants are welcomed to transition from iDEAL to Wero whereby the shared objective remains to complete the migration by the end of 2027 as such timeframe is the best guarantee to ensure the successful and smooth completion of the transition.

The launch of Wero ecommerce use case will be effective for customers of ABN AMRO, ASN Bank, bunq, BUUT, Finom, ING, Knab, Nationale-Nederlanden, Rabobank, Triodos Bank, Van Lanschot Kempen on October 26. Commercial payments will be extended in Q2 2027 with new payment management options as subscriptions and pay on delivery.

Through its phased approach, EPI is allowing every merchant to work on its own deployment calendar and that of its’ PSP, while also offering additional time to integrate purchase protection which will be embedded in Wero for Dutch consumers by January 2028. This protection is being discussed to craft a solid solution with the support of all parties involved, from merchants to unions, federations and PSPs as well as consumer associations, banks and relevant institutions. The solution will be aligned through a series of workshops which will be hosted over the fourth quarter of 2026, and announced in the first quarter of 2027.

Smoothness, security and trust have been the guiding principles of the iDEAL to Wero migration from the beginning, to truly build upon the foundation with the established use cases and simplicity of the solution while developing additional use cases and value-added services.

To support the ignition of Wero payments in webshops and pursue awareness initiatives, a new marketing campaign has been designed by DEPT Agency and orchestrated by Havas Media, and will be launched on October 26th, running until March 2027.

"Seeing Wero in the banking app of our Dutch shareholders and members is definitely the milestone we were looking forward to for the past year. Thanks to the continuous cooperation of all parties involved in the migration, we are entering this new phase ahead of the peak season, with the first merchants now joining the Wero journey - and we couldn’t be happier to observe the first transactions coming through. We are not just championing European sovereignty in payments: we are building it, creating new opportunities for commerce and empowering merchants to thrive," comment Martina Weimert, CEO, EPI Company.

The deployment of Wero doesn’t require any action from the customers – Banks will keep their customers informed through its official banking channels. Neither Wero nor the bank will ever ask consumers to provide personal or banking information outside the secure banking environment. No new service should be subscribed to.
